Welcome to Kinnaird Images.com, these pages
contain a collection of my photographs, most centered
in or around my home town of Thurmont, MD

Thurmont is known as the Gateway to the Mountains and
is one of the most scenic areas in the Old Line State. Located located 50 miles north of Washington, Thurmont is surrounded by the rolling countryside of Frederick County. Directly to our West are the Catoctin Mountains home to both the Catoctin Mountain National Park and the Cunningham Falls State Park. To the East the rolling farmland leads towards Baltimore,
the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean beyond.
North of Thurmont at Gettysburg, PA is the site of one of

the greatest battles of the American Civil War, beyond that the great mountains of central Pennsylvania and rolling farmlands of Lancaster County’s Amish community. Traveling South leads past Catoctin Furnace, home of a Revolutionary era iron furnace and on to the historic City of Frederick. Our Nation’s Capital, Washington, D.C. lies further to the South along the Potomac River with all it’s Federal history, monuments and museums . Cross the Potomac into Virginia and experience over 300 years of American history.

These images cover a wide range of subjects from local events to scenery and attractions. Centrally located between Washington, D.C., Baltimore, MD and Harrisburg, PA we are within an hours drive of some of the most historic and picturesque locations in the Mid-Atlantic region. Some albums will contain historic images from my personal collection along with recent views to give you a perspective of how little some things have changed. You are invited to take a few minutes and have a look at my little part of the world. Please contact me with any questions or comments about any of the images.
I hope you enjoy your visit!

The Robert S. Kinnaird Collection of
Historic Thurmont Images.

Thurmont celebrated it’s 250th anniversary in 2001. In conjunction with the celebration I started a project to collect, catalogue and display historic images of Thurmont to honor the memory of my father, Robert S. Kinnaird. The original plan was collect as many images as possible and make the available to residents in the form of photo albums located in the Historical Society, Public Library and Town Offices. At the time my guess was that I would get 200 or so images, but to date I have collected over 3,000 local images dating from the 1890’s through the recent years. Each year I display many of the images at our Community Show, I have not been able to display the entire collection at once and usually rotate a sampling of several

hundred images. Most are shown in 8” x 10” format while as many as 40 or 50 are displayed as 28” x 22” prints and others are available to view as computer images. Although I own many of the originals the majority of these images are on view through the generosity of local residents and collectors.
